This weekend I traveled down to Indiana to visit my brother. In Lafayette where Purdue University is they have a tradition called the Breakfast Club. Keep in mind this is a small town in Indiana where there is not much to do other than drink. So the Breakfast Club consists of waking up Saturday morning on Purdue football home games and going to the bar at 8:00 a.m.
Another thing is that when you go you are supposed to dress up. Basically it is Halloween with drunk people. When we got to the bar there were some people dressed up in some kind of Hawaiian garb with this drunk girl belting out her best rendition of "Pour some sugar on me" by Def leopard as she stumbled to the ground. Needless to say I chuckled to myself and thought oh boy this is going to be fun. Inside the bar it was dark because the bars put black trash bags on the windows to block out the sun so it seems as though it is night. As we step into the bar there are some people dressed up as police officers, hunters, various sports jerseys, and my favorite was a girl dressed in Purdue colors that wanted her picture with me because I had on my Virginia is for hustlers and she was from Virginia. I'm sure I am now on somebody's myspace profile. After a rough shot of tequila and some beer that for some reason had more bite at ten then at any other time of the day, we went to the game. I was doing well as far as alcohol consumption goes but it was supplemented by the flask of brandy I had in my sock. Purdue put up a good game and won against Ball State. Latter we went to a sports bar and continued drinking. Mind you that I'm not much of a drinker with not much experience, so by this time after starting at 9;30 in the morning I couldn't believe that I had drank so much.
It was a great day of beer and football, can't get any more american than that. Most of all it was good to see my brother. As I was reflecting on the 8 hour trip home I though how cool it was that my brother had not only gone to college, left everything behind to go to a strange state to get a masters, and even met a girl that he wants to marry. All of which are great feats and firsts for our family. Especially the last one! I am very proud of him and all that he has done with his life.
