News reporter in North Korea

In the mornings as I get ready for another day of work/school/masochistic torture (i.e. Contracts) etc. I watch the news. There was a reporter in North Korea talking to the people on the street about America. It was interesting some of the responses. They hated America for various reasons and it seemed that the propaganda machine was in full force. But that isn't out of the ordinary for me. Its expected as much as we do it here in the US. Here is the part that I thought was interesting. There were images of school boys marching in line and singing to the President of North Korea, Kim Jong-il. If I could sidetrack at this point. What I've learned and what I know about Asian culture is that there are some distinctions between the US and Asian Countries. In the United States we have become incredible individualistic. Which I think John F. Kennedy exemplified when he said "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." JFK extended the challenge to switch from the good of the individual to the good of the whole or country in this case. In Asian countries there would never be a creed extended because the culture is one of the good of the whole. One of the reasons that Communism has worked so well in China is because it is part of their culture to support the good of the whole its an easy transition to Communism or to remain as such. With the advent of the internet in China the government puts down strict regulations on what can be said and seen. The interesting thing is that the Chinese people are self regulating. Foucault created an idea of power and punishment and used the panopticon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panopticon. The idea is that you use the Panopticon as a prison. The outer walls form a see through cell so that the prisoners every action is exposed. The idea is that you have the apperance that the tower in the middle is ful of guards. Initially you might fill it with guards but overtime you don't have to have anyone watching at all because the prisoners now have a preception of power when there is not any actual power there. There is this culture of the good of the whole and throw in the cultural revolution http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_Revolution which people basically told on each other for "unchinese" activities similar to McCarthyism in the US but to more of an extreme and you get self regulating Chinese. I know that these are Chinese examples and I am talking about North Korea but I think it is an example of what the culture is like. This is a big ideology that gets in the way of two countries coming together on the same ground is because they each stand on different mountains of culture, one being the good of the whole and the other the good of the individual. So when I giant blond western news reporter asks why do you hate America? Its one that so culturally difficult that will take a lot of time to unravel and understanding. Oh I don't know how to end this but I hope you get the point that I'm trying to avoid writing my paper.
